Well... when things suck, you can always just lose yourself in another world. Not every story ends happily, but they never do in life. But usually the stories are the kinds that matter - at least people try to do the right thing. And in the most popular sorts of stories, the heroes always save the world. It's nice to at least think for a little while that things are going to be okay.
