[There's a... very uncertain-looking young man peering into the camera. He's really not sure what to make of any of this. It's a little hard to believe that he's like this, and he can't morph, and that there are Pokemon.]

I guess... I'm stuck here? No one in town really had anything useful to say. None of this makes much sense. And I'm guessing asking how to get home isn't going to get me any real answers, either.

[There's a squawk off-camera, and he looks concerned for a minute.]

I'm guessing the first step is to head to the next town, right? And start building up a team...

[... Why did he make this broadcast anyway?]

... If anyone's got any advice for that kind of thing, feel free to give it.

[He clicks the broadcast off.]

[He's not in New Bark Town anymore. He's nearby, but he's sitting in a small area free of tall grass, staring down his Pokemon. What's a Rufflet, anyway? ... At least the body language is familiar. He holds out his hand, waiting for the little Pokemon to approach.]

There are but... Well, it seems that people who have been here for some time don't put much stock in the police.

Why not?

There's still an organization out there apparently that they haven't made any strides to capturing or making a dent in.

Sounds like they need to try harder.

Well... Are you a trainer or a breeder? It should tell you in the back you get starting out.

I see, bad luck then.

There's really only walking that's available to you right now, but you can always get a Pokemon egg from the breeding center. Blitzle, Ponyta, or an Onix.. I think those would be big enough to ride. They help cut down the traveling time.

Flying Pokemon need a TM called Fly for you to use them- I have one. But you also have to have defeated... Ah, I'm sorry, I forget his name, but he's a trainer in Violet City.

You see, a lot of the cities past New Bark and Cherrygrove have what are called Gyms. If you defeat the Gym Leader in charge of them, they'll give you special items, money... Things like that. They're really important for finding special TMs like Fly, or allowing you to use them in the first place. The one in Violet is the latter.

Why's that bad luck?

That's... frustrating. Though I guess it's fine, I don't think he's big enough to carry me yet, anyway.

Don't worry, he'll evolve into something bigger! A lot of Pokemon are surprising like that. My own starter did very much the same.

I figure, but for now he's still pretty small.

Oh. [Garry gives a small chuckle.] The personalities of each Pokemon really do tend to vary... But it looks as though you've gotten yourself a good partner.

Anyway, if you do decide to get an egg from the Breeding Center, it takes around a week to hatch and that's really how long you need to be working at any sort of job so the two really do go well together.

[Ack. And there's the kicker-- the price for a ticket. Riku reaches for the side of his neck, giving a slow nod.]

That's the one downside. Saves you a few days of walking, but if you want to keep a little pocket change, guess it'd be better to just stick to Johto.

Really depends on how adventurous you're feeling. Johto's early routes are all pretty straightforward. You won't hit your first real forest until you reach Azalea.

I could always build up some money and come back to take the ferry. Forests aren't really that much of a problem for me.

You've got the right idea.

Main advice is be prepared to spend a few nights sleeping outdoors, it's a little bit of a trek to the next town on foot. Hope you like sleepin' under the stars.
